How the A5 practice test works
This is the ASE A5 Brakes test in your browser: 45 questions drawn at random from 406 A5 practice questions, with 75 minutes for all of them, the scored length and time of the real test. Each question has four answers and one is right, and you can move between questions and change your answers until time runs out.
When time runs out, the test is submitted as it stands. You see your score and every question you missed, with its explanation. ASE publishes no fixed passing score, so this practice test counts 32 right answers out of 45 as a pass: you can miss 13.
What the A5 test covers
ASE's test specifications split the 45 scored questions into these content areas:
- Hydraulic, Power Assist, and Parking Brake Systems Diagnosis and Repair19
- Drum Brake Diagnosis and Repair5
- Disc Brake Diagnosis and Repair11
- Electronic Brake Control Systems: ABS, Traction Control (TCS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Diagnosis and Repair10
The real A5 test
The real test has 45 scored questions and 10 research questions that don't count toward your score, mixed in unmarked, all in 75 minutes, so answer every one. You take it at a Prometric test center, or online at home or work if you're eligible, and you can show each question in Spanish beside the English. A5 is one of the eight tests, A1 to A8, that make an ASE-Certified Master Automobile Technician.
